If you’re looking for a new garage door, you have a lot of different options—from the material to the panel design. One of the most basic decisions to make is the door type. Should you get a sectional or rolling garage door?
Sectional and rolling, or roller, are two of the most common types of garage doors. If you’re ready to replace your old door, contact Overhead Door Co. of Greater Cincinnati™ by filling out the form on the right—or keep reading to learn more about the differences between sectional and rolling doors!
Sectional vs. Rolling Garage Doors
Sectional
Sectional garage doors are commonly used for homes, but there are some designed for commercial applications as well. Typically made of six to eight panels that slide up and overhead when the door opens, sectional garage doors can be made of any material—steel, aluminum, wood, fiberglass, vinyl, etc.
- Don’t require any extra outside space for opening
- Are reliable and robust (each panel has its own connection to the track of the door)
- Can be a cost-effective option
Rolling
Typically made with corrugated steel (which makes it more impact-resistant), roller garage doors are often used for commercial and industrial applications, such as fire stations, storage facilities and businesses that need to stay secure and closed. Some rolling garage doors use a spring inside the rolling mechanism and some use a manual pulley and chain system or a geared motor to roll the door up and down.
- Are usually quieter in operation
- Are very secure
- Are resistant to impact from high winds, heavy rain, etc.
What Is Better, a Sectional or Rolling Door?
In reality, there is no “better” type of garage door. When it comes time to choose between sectional and roller, there isn’t a superior one—it just depends on your needs and preferences. But there are some things to think about that can help you make a decision:
- What is the building you need a new garage door for?
- Do you need an impact-resistant door?
- What items are inside the garage and do they require extra protection?
You can—and should—talk it through with a garage door professional. They can help you choose the best garage door for your home, budget, lifestyle, needs and aesthetic tastes.
